How To Make Good Tea Choices

By Teresa Cheong, RightEatingHabits.com - I am particular about the quality of tea I drink. I am careful to select teas with low caffeine content. And I prefer organic tea grown by small farmers. So when a friend gave me a sachet of Numi Organic tea, I didn’t brew it immediately. I read the product label first!

How to make good tea choices?

Begin by asking these four questions will help you make good tea choices and pick good quality tea:

1) Is the tea fair trade certified?

Numi organic tea is Fair Trade certified. To be Fair Trade certified, a company must show that it supports the livelihoods of farmers and farm workers. You may pay slightly more for Fair Trade Certified Tea, but I think it is worth it – because Fair Trade practices support marginalized farmers in developing countries, and promote enviromental sustainability.

2) Is the tea company eco-friendly and community-minded?

I make it a point to support small or medium-sized companies which are community and environmentally-minded.

Curious to find out more about this new organic tea company, I did an internet search. I was delighted to discover that a high proportion of Numi’s handmade bamboo tea gift and tea packaging are assembled by women who work from home. Numi’s packaging materials are also biodegradable!

3) Is the tea organically grown?

Organic teas are picked from tea plants that have not been sprayed with chemicals, herbicides or pesticides. This is one primary reason why organic teas taste much better than non organic ones. I always enjoy a cup of good quality tea. The fresh, bright, and lively taste of organic tea stays with you long after you've finished your cup of tea. Also by drinking organic teas, you can be sure that you are not ingesting poisons and toxins from pesticides and herbicides.

4) Why drink tea?

People drink tea for many reasons. Some people drink tea to lose weight. Some drink tea to relax or refresh their minds. Others drink tea for its health enhancing benefits. The antioxidant flavonoids in tea are good for the heart. The catechins in green tea are said to have cancer-fighting benefits. Others drink tea for the pure pleasure of enjoying a cup of good quality tea. Know the benefits you hope to reap from drinking tea - and pick the tea that suits your needs. Black teas have the highest amount of caffeine among all the teas, and white teas have practically no caffeine. Herbal or fruity teas are caffeine-free and make great, relaxing drinks for beginning tea drinkers.

Exquisite Packaging From Handpainted Original Paintings

Numi organic tea makes exceptional gifts. I adore the exquisite, eye catching, beautiful designs that graced the packaging of Numi tea gift sets. The designs were taken from handpainted original paintings by Reem, a trained artist, and one half of the brother and sister team who founded the company.

How would I rate Numi organic tea? It is certainly one of my favorites for a cup of good quality tea.

Here is my pick of organic teas from Numi.

Puerh Tea (Black Tea)

Puerh is an aged black tea from China prized for its medicinal value. Some people drink it as a natural weight loss tea.

I like the strong earthy taste of the Puerh Tuocha. It is a refreshing digestive tea to drink before or after meals. Numi organic tea offers a choice of four USDA certified organic Puerh tea blends.

Dragon Lily - White Tea (non caffeine)

I love the craftsmanship that goes into the exquisite packaging. Makes a lovely gift. Watch how the Dragon Lily burst open into a floral arrangement of superb white tea and stunning flowers. When steeped, sprinkles of osmanthus petals surface and an orange lily blossoms, a mesmerizing display. This organic tea from Numi teases with a sweet apricot taste.
